Group 1

Spacing and alignment

Problems with how much room the teeth have in the arch, and how each tooth sits within it.

Crowded teeth

Overlapping teeth from too little space, often treatable without extractions after careful planning.

Gap teeth

Spaces between teeth, including a front-tooth gap, closed with aligners or braces.

Rotated teeth

Teeth turned in their socket, which need controlled movement and stable retention.

Snaggletooth & high canines

Canines erupting high or outside the arch, guided into place with braces or aligners.

Missing-teeth space

Closing or opening space where a tooth is missing, coordinated with any future restoration.

Group 2

Bite problems

How the upper and lower teeth meet when you close, chew and speak.

Deep bite

Upper front teeth covering too much of the lowers, which can wear teeth and strain gums.

Overjet (buck teeth)

Upper front teeth sitting far ahead of the lowers, assessed for dental and skeletal causes.

Underbite

Lower teeth in front of the uppers; treatment depends on growth stage and jaw position.

Crossbite

Upper teeth biting inside the lowers, at the front or sides, sometimes linked to jaw width.

Open bite

Front or side teeth that do not meet, often related to habits, tongue posture or jaw pattern.

Midline shift

Upper and lower dental midlines that do not line up with each other or the face.

Group 3

Jaw and face

Conditions where the skeleton, lips and facial profile are part of the diagnosis.

Protruding mouth

Teeth and lips that sit forward of the profile, evaluated with facial scanning and 3D CT.

Facial asymmetry

Uneven jaw or smile, separated into dental and skeletal components before planning.

Gummy smile

Excess gum display when smiling, which orthodontics may improve depending on the cause.

TMJ and orthodontics

How jaw-joint symptoms relate to the bite, and when orthodontic care is or is not appropriate.

Group 4

Other conditions

Impacted canine

A canine that has not erupted, located on 3D CT and often guided in with surgical exposure.

Relapse after braces

Teeth that shifted after earlier treatment, and what re-treatment and retention involve.

Mouth breathing in children

How breathing habits can relate to jaw growth, and when an early orthodontic check helps.

FAQ

Questions about orthodontic conditions

  • How do I know which condition I have?

Many people have more than one issue, such as crowding with a deep bite. A diagnosis needs an in-person exam with digital scans, X-rays or 3D CT and photos. At Isu Yonsei Baro, Dr. Lee reviews teeth, bite, roots, skeleton and facial balance in about 60 minutes and explains findings in English.

  • Can bite problems be treated in adults?

Often, yes. Teeth can move at any age when gums and bone are healthy. Some skeletal problems in adults may need surgery combined with orthodontics, while many dental bite issues can be managed with braces or aligners. Individual results vary; treatment is decided after examination.

  • When should a child be checked for jaw or bite problems?

An early check during the mixed-dentition years can show whether growth-related issues like underbite, crossbite or mouth breathing need monitoring or early treatment. The clinic uses growth-plate analysis to help time care. See kids' early orthodontics.

  • Will I need teeth removed to fix crowding or protrusion?

Not always. Depending on space needs and facial profile, options may include arch development or molar distalization with temporary anchorage devices. Dr. Lee has published research on non-extraction distalization. Whether extraction is needed is decided only after a full diagnosis.
