Adult Orthodontics in Seoul: Braces and Aligners for Grown-Ups
Quick answer
Adults can usually have orthodontic treatment at any age, as long as the gums and bone supporting the teeth are healthy. At Isu Yonsei Baro Orthodontics, Dr. Sally Lee treats adults with clear aligners, ceramic, lingual or metal braces, and plans each case with 3D CT so roots and bone are assessed before teeth are moved. Many adult cases take about 12–24 months.
Why more adults straighten their teeth
Many adults never had braces as children, or had them and saw their teeth shift back over the years. Others want to correct a bite that is wearing down teeth, make room for a dental implant or crown, or simply feel more comfortable smiling at work.
Teeth move at any age. What changes in adulthood is that the jaws have finished growing, so skeletal problems cannot be redirected by growth, and the health of the gums and bone matters more.
How adult treatment differs
- Bone and gum health: a 3D CT shows how much bone surrounds each root, which guides how far teeth can safely move.
- Existing dental work: crowns, implants and fillings are factored into the plan.
- Aesthetics: adults often prefer discreet appliances such as aligners, ceramic or lingual braces.
- Coordination: some adults also need care from a general dentist or periodontist before or during treatment.
A real adult example
One consented case published by the clinic shows an adult with crowding treated with Invisalign without extractions over 20 months. Every adult's teeth, bone and goals are different, so this illustrates an approach rather than a typical result.
What to expect at Isu Yonsei Baro
The first visit takes about 60 minutes. We take an intraoral digital scan, X-rays or a RAY Quantum 5D CT and a RAY Face 3D facial scan. Dr. Lee examines your teeth, bite, jaw joints and gums, then explains the realistic options in English, with a timeline and a written estimate, before you decide.
In Dr. Lee's practice, adult plans start from the face and the bone rather than from the teeth alone: she checks whether the roots have room to move within the bone and how lip support and smile display will change, so that straighter teeth also look natural in your face.
Because Dr. Lee personally treats every patient from consultation to retention, you see the same specialist at each visit. Evening appointments on Mondays and Thursdays until 9 PM, and Saturday mornings, are designed around work schedules.

Choosing an appliance as an adult
There is rarely one right appliance. Clear aligners suit adults who want to remove the appliance for meals and meetings and can commit to all-day wear. Ceramic braces offer fixed control with a low profile, while lingual braces hide the hardware completely behind the teeth. Metal braces remain a practical, efficient choice for complex movements. Dr. Lee explains how each option would work for your specific bite, your schedule and the way you use your smile at work, and then lets you decide.
Individual results and side effects vary; treatment is decided after examination.

Frequently asked questions
Am I too old for braces?
There is no fixed upper age limit for orthodontics. What matters is the health of your gums and the bone around your teeth. Dr. Lee checks this with a 3D CT and clinical exam. Adults in their 40s, 50s and beyond can often be treated, sometimes in coordination with a gum specialist.
Do adults need extractions for braces?
Not always. Many adult crowding cases can be treated without extractions using arch development, small amounts of enamel reshaping or molar distalization with mini-screws. Some cases, especially with marked protrusion, may still benefit from extractions. Dr. Lee explains the options and trade-offs after reviewing your records.
Does adult orthodontic treatment take longer?
Adult teeth can move a little more slowly than children's, and adults cannot use jaw growth, but many adult cases still finish in roughly 12 to 24 months. Your timeline depends on the problem and the appliance. Dr. Lee gives you an estimate at the first visit, not a promise.
Can I have treatment if I have crowns or implants?
Usually yes. Crowns and veneers can generally be moved like natural teeth, while implants do not move and are used as fixed points in the plan. Dr. Lee reviews your existing dental work on the CT and may coordinate with your general dentist before or after orthodontic treatment.
