Can Adults Get Braces?
Short answer
Yes. Adults of any age can usually have orthodontic treatment as long as their teeth, gums and supporting bone are healthy enough. Options include Invisalign, Angel Aligner, ceramic, lingual and metal braces. At Isu Yonsei Baro Orthodontics in Seoul, Dr. Sally Lee evaluates teeth, roots, gums and jaw with 3D imaging before recommending an adult plan.
Orthodontics is not just for teenagers
Many adults straighten their teeth for the first time in their 20s, 30s, 40s or later, and others return because teeth shifted after childhood braces. Teeth can move at any age, because the biology that allows tooth movement continues throughout life. What changes in adulthood is the planning.
What is different for adults
- No growth to guide. In children, growth can be used to help correct jaw relationships. Adults have finished growing, so skeletal problems may need camouflage treatment or, in some cases, a combination with jaw surgery.
- Gum and bone health. Healthy gums and bone are essential. Adults may need gum or dental care before or during orthodontics.
- Existing dental work. Crowns, fillings, implants and missing teeth affect what is possible and how appliances are attached.
- Lifestyle. Many adults prefer discreet options and appointments that fit around work.
Options for adults
- Clear aligners such as Invisalign or Angel Aligner are removable and nearly invisible.
- Ceramic braces use tooth-colored brackets.
- Lingual braces sit behind the teeth and are hidden from view.
- Metal braces remain a highly efficient choice for many cases.
- Limited treatment may align the front teeth only when full correction is not needed.
An example from our clinic
One consented case on our site involved an adult with crowded teeth treated with Invisalign, without extractions, over 20 months. It shows one route; your plan depends on your own exam.
What to expect at Isu Yonsei Baro
Your first visit takes about 60 minutes. We take intraoral digital scans, X-rays or a 3D CBCT scan with the RAY Quantum 5D CT, a 3D facial scan with RAY Face and photos. Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee, a Ministry of Health and Welfare certified orthodontic specialist, looks at teeth, bite, roots, skeleton and whole-face balance before recommending a plan.
In Dr. Lee's practice, adult treatment often starts with deciding what really needs to change, which sometimes means a limited plan rather than full treatment. You receive options, a timeline and a written estimate in English before deciding. Dr. Lee treats you personally at every visit.
We are open Monday and Thursday until 9 PM and Saturday mornings, about a 1-minute walk from Isu Station Exit 2.
Is it too late?
For most healthy adults, it is not. The more useful question is what you want to improve and what is realistic for your teeth and gums. A specialist exam answers both.
Individual results and side effects vary; treatment is decided after examination.

People also ask
Is there an age limit for braces?
There is no fixed upper age limit. What matters is the health of your teeth, gums and supporting bone. Many adults in their 40s, 50s and beyond have orthodontic treatment. Dr. Lee assesses your oral health and imaging before recommending whether treatment is suitable.
Do adult braces take longer than for teens?
Sometimes, but not always. Adult tooth movement can be slower, and growth cannot be used to correct jaw issues. Most comprehensive cases still typically fall within roughly 12–30 months. Your timeline depends on your specific case.
Can I get braces if I have crowns or implants?
Often yes. Brackets and attachments can be bonded to many crowns, though implants do not move like natural teeth. Dr. Lee plans around existing dental work and may use implants or other teeth as anchorage where helpful.
What is the most discreet option for adults?
Lingual braces, placed behind the teeth, are hidden from view; clear aligners are also very discreet and removable. Ceramic braces are less noticeable than metal. Dr. Lee can explain which suits your bite and lifestyle.
