Patient question · Orthodontic emergencies

What Should I Do About a Broken Bracket While Traveling?

Short answer

A loose bracket or poking wire while traveling is usually uncomfortable rather than an emergency. Cover sharp areas with orthodontic wax, avoid hard or sticky foods, keep any loose piece and contact your orthodontist to plan a repair. Isu Yonsei Baro Orthodontics patients can message Dr. Sally Lee's team by WhatsApp, KakaoTalk or email from abroad.

First, stay calm

Brackets can come loose from biting something hard, a fall or simply wear and tear. A broken bracket usually means a tooth temporarily stops moving as planned, which is rarely a crisis for a short time. The main goals are to stay comfortable and avoid making things worse.

Quick fixes you can do yourself

  • Loose bracket still on the wire. Leave it in place. Cover it with orthodontic wax if it rubs.
  • Bracket came off completely. Keep it in a small bag or container and bring it to your orthodontist.
  • Poking wire. Push it gently back with a clean cotton swab or pencil eraser, or cover it with wax. If it cannot be managed, a dentist may be able to clip it.
  • Lost elastic or tie. Usually not urgent; mention it at your next visit.
  • Sore cheeks or lips. Rinse with warm salt water and use wax.

What to avoid

  • Do not try to glue a bracket back on yourself.
  • Avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods until it is repaired.
  • Do not cut a wire unless you have been advised how; you could swallow a piece.

When to get urgent care

Seek prompt dental or medical care if you have facial injury, a loosened or broken tooth, significant swelling, bleeding that will not stop, or any difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Planning for travel

If you have braces and a trip coming up, pack a small kit: orthodontic wax, a travel toothbrush, floss threaders or interdental brushes, a small mirror and any elastics you are wearing. For aligner patients, bring your current and next aligners plus your case.

People also ask

Is a broken bracket an emergency?

Usually not. A loose bracket is typically uncomfortable rather than dangerous. Cover sharp areas with wax and contact your orthodontist to arrange a repair. Seek urgent care if there is injury, swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

How long can I wait to fix a broken bracket?

Often a short wait is fine, but the affected tooth may stop moving or shift slightly. Contact your orthodontist to decide on timing. If you are traveling, a message with a photo helps them advise you.

Can any dentist fix my braces abroad?

A general dentist can often help with comfort, such as clipping a poking wire or removing a loose bracket. Rebonding is best done by an orthodontist familiar with your plan. Keep your orthodontist informed of any work done.

What should I do if I lose an aligner while traveling?

Many orthodontists advise wearing your previous or next aligner, depending on fit, until you can be seen. Contact your orthodontist for specific instructions. Bringing spare aligners on trips helps avoid this problem.
